A new fire strikes the Hollywood Hills, destroying almost 2,000 structures and killing five people.
Wildfires raging around Los Angeles County have destroyed over 2,000 buildings and claimed the lives of at least five individuals. Through Thursday, red flag warnings were still in place for a large portion of Ventura County and Los Angeles County.
According to CALFire, the Sunset Fire has already burnt close to 20 acres and is located in the hills directly above Sunset Blvd and Hollywood Blvd.
Another wildfire has broken out in the Los Angeles area, engulfing the Hollywood Hills and forcing many homes to evacuate.
According to CALFire, the Sunset Fire, which is burning in the hills just above Sunset Blvd and Hollywood Blvd, has so far scorched almost 20 acres.
Los Angeles City Fire Chief Kristin Crowley announced the news of a new fire burning near Runyon Canyon in the Hollywood Hills during a press event at approximately 5:50 p.m.
A California insurer came under fire for “cancelling hundreds of wildfire policies” in Pacific Palisades prior to these fatal fires.
Crowley quickly excused herself to oversee the developing scenario after announcing that all hands were on deck to respond to the emergency.
Local media is being used by fire officials to urge people in the area to evacuate right away.
LAFD Official Margaret Stewart told KCAL, the local CBS station, “We have a very dangerous and explosive fire in the Runyon Canyon, and we cannot emphasize enough we need people to adhere to our immediate mandatory evacuation.”
Areas west of US Highway 101 to Laurel Canyon Blvd. and north of Hollywood Blvd. are subject to mandatory evacuation orders.
In the meantime, regions between Sunset and Hollywood Boulevard, from N Stanley Ave to Laurel Canyon, are under evacuation recommendations.
Mandatory evacuation orders are in effect for residents close to the Palisades fire in west Los Angeles. In response to the Eaton fire, evacuations have also been ordered in parts of Santa Monica and Altadena, as well as in the San Fernando Valley owing to the Hurst fire. Firefighter reinforcements from other states were either already on the site or on their way to combat the fires, according to an update provided by Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.
He stated that “numerous” teams from Arizona, 60 teams from Oregon, 45 from Washington state, 15 from Utah, and 10 from New Mexico had been sent.
Tragically, five people have died as a result of the extensive fires that have swept over the greater Los Angeles area. The fire has destroyed more than 15,000 acres and about 1,100 buildings.
